1. A Last-Minute Addition
The album was already finished, mixed, and handed in to the record label. Sheeran was taking a week off when his friend and frequent collaborator, Amy Wadge, visited him. While Sheeran was in the shower, Wadge started playing a few chords on a guitar.
Sheeran heard them, ran downstairs, and they wrote the entire song in about 20 minutes (at 2:00 AM).He had two specific muses.
2. His Grandparents:
He was inspired by their long, enduring marriage, which is where the famous line “loving you ’til we’re 70” originated.
Athina Andrelos: He was in a very happy relationship with his then-girlfriend at the time, which provided the romantic emotional core of the lyrics.
3. The “Van Morrison” Influence
Sheeran has stated that he wanted to release a song that channelled the “blue-eyed soul” style of Van Morrison. He felt that modern music wasn’t tapping into that soulful, rhythmic acoustic vibe anymore.
